The World of Deodorant
Sweating. Not our body's most popular ability, but one that is necessary and should not be suppressed. Our body doesn't just celebrate sweat stains on clothes, it needs sweat as a protection and maintenance mechanism. Why exactly do we sweat in the first place?
The main reason we sweat is to regulate our temperature . Our body is constantly producing heat, particularly when we are exerting ourselves. It has to get rid of this heat, otherwise we would literally be boiling inside. We also sweat for the skin to function. Our skin has an acid mantle that protects it against bacteria, fungi and other invaders. This mantle is created by secretions (such as sweat) from the skin glands. Another side effect of sweating is that our body odor serves as a symbol of sympathy . Every person has their own scent. The composition of sweat is also a part of this. Body odor plays a role in whether you find someone likeable or rather unlikable.
There are two to three million sweat glands in the skin and they secrete between half a litre and a litre of sweat every day, even without exercise. There are various ways to make everyday sweating easier. Even for us eco-freaks. The cliché of the smelly eco-freak is so outdated.
The world of deodorants explains:
deodorant |
antiperspirant |
A deodorant covers up unpleasant smells. Ingredients act against bacteria and thus prevent sweat from starting to smell. |
Antiperspirant prevents sweating. The ingredients form a layer over the sweat pores. The pores are closed in this way and produce less or no sweat at all. The ingredients most commonly used are aluminum chlorohydrate or aluminum chloride. |
In short: deodorant stops the smell, but you sweat normally. Antiperspirant clogs the pores, so you sweat less.
Antiperspirants prevent a mechanism used by the body by blocking the sweat ducts. Clogged pores can become a problem: sweat builds up, which irritates our skin and leads to skin irritation or itching. This sweat-inhibiting effect is caused by the aluminum. Using antiperspirants also allows aluminum to enter our bodies. This is especially true if, for example, we have just shaved our armpits. Aluminum is not a substance we want in our bodies. The aluminum salts are suspected of increasing the risk of cancer and are associated with diseases.
Natural Cosmetics Deodorants - Why It's Worth It
We conclude: It is better to use deodorants and avoid antiperspirants. When choosing deodorants, we focus on natural substances. Even if a conventional deodorant does not contain aluminum, you will find some undesirable ingredients. The following should be avoided: parabens, petrochemicals such as the emulsifiers PEG (polyethylene glycols) and synthetic fragrances.
Natural deodorants do not contain these substances. They are replaced with natural ingredients. The basis of our solid deodorants is: baking soda and shea butter . Baking soda neutralizes the acids in sweat, which reduces the growth of bacteria that cause unpleasant odors. It also absorbs moisture. To keep the armpits soft, it is supplemented with shea butter, which is very moisturizing. The natural process of sweating is not interrupted, but the odors are neutralized. Ergo: You sweat, but you don't stink.
What needs to be said here is that anyone who switches will sweat more. That's completely normal, because if you don't plug the sweat pores, something will come out. Many are disappointed and give up because it feels as if the deodorant without aluminum doesn't work as well. Keep the goal in mind: deodorants have an antibacterial effect and help against sweat odor, but they don't stop sweating. And rightly so. Sweating is a completely natural, necessary process of the body.
