Has Unpackaged failed? No!
Time and again, media outlets, some with a very wide reach, report on the supposed failure of the unpackaged concept. However, when stores close in other sectors, the reporting is largely neutral. We think that is damaging to business!
What do you think?
Inflation, rising energy costs and the aftermath of the Corona lockdowns are hitting not only us hard, but also the other stores registered with the Unpackaged Association.
It is therefore not surprising that at the beginning of 2022 there were still around 340 unpackaged stores registered with the Unpackaged Association. Currently there are only 270.
But unpackaged stores are not the only ones that have had to close their operations in the past three years. In total, around 41,000 stores have closed since the start of the pandemic.
If media outlets, some of which have a very wide reach, repeatedly report on the supposed failure of the unpackaged concept, this has a damaging effect on business: Unpackaged stores gradually acquire negative connotations in people's minds.
This effect is further reinforced by the fact that many people tend to only read the headlines. The last sentence of a recent article by NTV states: "Despite everything, the Association of Unpackaged Stores is also optimistic about the future: 115 new stores are currently being planned."
