Why you shouldn't flush wet wipes down the toilet and what alternatives there are

wet wipes

Would you have known that?

If wet wipes are disposed of in the toilet, they become entangled with other solids to form tear-resistant clumps, so-called tangles.

which are responsible for a large proportion of the damage and malfunctions to pipes and pumps in the sewer system. Tangles sometimes occur because wet wipes, unlike conventional toilet paper, are tear-resistant and also not water-soluble - despite all the promises made by the manufacturers.

In Berlin alone, the cost of the laborious removal is around €800,000 per year . The costs are being covered in the form of an increased sewage fee. the sum of the citizens worn.

If you dispose of your wet wipes in the general waste , you will not only avoid expensive damage to the municipal sewer system, but you will also reduce the release of pollutants into the environment.

Alternatively, you can replace wet wipes with a damp washcloth or a butt shower . This way you can avoid a lot of waste. If you don't want to do without wet wipes, you can also make them yourself . This is not only environmentally friendly, but also cost-effective.

The recipe:

You can easily make wet wipes yourself. The easiest way is to take a washcloth and wet it. ;-) You can cut washcloths out of old clothes or old towels. You don't even have to sew the edges. Of course, there are also many places where you can buy reusable products (washcloths, makeup remover pads, tissues).

Another possibility is to use coconut oil, jojoba oil or almond oil, each pure.

Of course, we also have recipes for wet toilet paper for advanced users: Mix 50 ml of chestnut tincture (prepared with 40% alcohol) with a teaspoon each of aloe vera gel and glycerin and a few drops of an essential oil of your choice. Pour the mixture into a 100 ml spray bottle, fill the bottle with water and shake. When required, simply spray the butt spray onto the toilet paper - your DIY wet wipes are ready.* Caution: only make as much as you can use. Without preservatives, such a mixture will not last forever.

By the way: When it comes to wet wipes, we believe that the responsibility does not lie solely with the consumer. Manufacturers must also be held more accountable for clearly labeling their products and contributing to educating customers!
