Garbage dump ocean!
The plastic crisis has long since reached the world's oceans. Plastic bags, toothbrushes, nets, plastic bottles, canisters, flip-flops are floating there - endangering habitats and living creatures.
Unimaginable: If we don't act against the plastic crisis NOW, by 2050 there will be more plastic pieces than fish swimming in the sea. 😰
Up to 439,000 tons of plastic
are estimated to float on the surface of the world’s oceans – and are therefore visible to us.
86,000,000 tons of plastic
have so far ended up in the oceans . This means that we can only see 0.5% of the total amount of plastic floating in the ocean with the naked eye. 99.5% of the plastic in the ocean floats beneath the water surface or on the seabed.
10,000,000 tons of plastic
are added annually. That corresponds to 1 truck load per minute !
4.5 times the size of Germany
is the area of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, the largest of the world's five main garbage patches. The plastic collects in certain places in the ocean according to the ocean currents. However, you still can't see the garbage patches from a distance because most of the plastic floats under the water's surface.
95 percent
of the dead fulmars that die on the North Sea beach have an average of 0.31 grams of plastic in their stomachs. That doesn't sound like a lot. However, if you convert the amount to a human body, it is 31 grams, or a plate full of plastic.
3,700,000,000,000 euros
will cost us to remedy the negative impacts caused by the amount of new plastic produced in 2019 alone. The massive plastic pollution of the oceans not only has extremely damaging effects on marine habitats and creatures – it also costs
What can you do?
Would you like to take something with you on the go? Use reusable solutions or bring your own boxes ( you can get inspiration from us here ). Otherwise: feel free to use a plastic-free solution. There are many options available these days. :-)
Plastic is not our enemy per se! But we should be very careful about what we use it for and make sure that our waste does not end up in the ocean. This is where the law comes into play, of course, and should definitely ban the export of waste.
