Is climate protection making us poor?
Yes. Climate protection is expensive. Do you know what is even more expensive? The consequences of the climate crisis without climate protection.
Many people are saying that the plan to quickly achieve climate neutrality would be far too expensive and socially unacceptable. Unfortunately, this is systematic: social policy and climate policy are often played off against each other.
However, all these reports ignore that the most expensive of all would be the consequences of the climate crisis without climate protection. Because the costs of a crisis without necessary intervention are disproportionate to the investments necessary to mitigate the climate crisis.
145 billion euros in damages
At least 2001 to 2021 were caused by the consequences of extreme weather events. 80 billion of them since 2018 alone.
7x more often
Children born in 2020 will experience heatwaves than someone born in 1960. They will also probably experience 3x more floods.
climate policy versus social policy
are often played off against each other. Many reject measures on the grounds that they would disproportionately affect poorer households.
However, it is the responsibility of politicians to ensure that climate adaptation is socially acceptable. If designed correctly, climate policy can certainly offset social consequences.
In any case, it is already known that the climate crisis is already affecting poorer sections of the population much harder. We must act now.
What can you do?
Talk, talk and talk again! Raise awareness and demand change from politicians. The Corona crisis has recently shown that if the will is really there, a lot can be achieved!
The measures for climate neutrality are worthwhile for everyone. "It is good if the cities become cleaner, quieter and safer for everyone," says Luisa Neubauer.
The costs of the necessary investments for a climate-neutral Berlin in 2030 cannot yet be reliably quantified. It is assumed that the figure will be in the double-digit billions. For comparison: the flood in the Ahr Valley alone caused damage amounting to 40 billion euros. New reports confirm that the effects and damage have been exacerbated by the climate crisis.
