Grilling - but please without so much waste!
Summer is here and with it the perfect opportunity to enjoy outdoor grilling. But when we think of grilling, we often think of plastic waste, aluminum foil and disposable tableware. But don't worry! Today we'll show you how to host a sustainable and environmentally friendly barbecue in the zero waste niche. We'll introduce you to some great products and ideas that will help you minimize your ecological footprint and protect nature.
1. Bring your own plate
A simple step that makes a big difference: Instead of using disposable dishes, simply bring your own plate. This way you avoid unnecessary waste and also have your personal favorite dishes with you. Alternatively, just eat from your lunchbox!
2. Cloth handkerchief for sustainable cleanliness
Instead of wasting paper napkins, use a reusable cloth handkerchief . It's perfect for wiping your fingers and is an environmentally friendly alternative. Maybe you already have some at home? :)
3. Meatless Grilling Ideas - Creative Variety
Discover the variety of meatless barbecue ideas and conjure up delicious dishes that will delight not only vegetarians:
- Tofu from the unpackaged store, aromatically marinated and grilled, offers a delicious source of protein. We have fresh (smoked) tofu without packaging at the latest on Thursdays in the store at Wiener Str. 16, 10999 Berlin
- Pumpkin, sweet potatoes, potatoes, eggplant, zucchini, mushrooms, peppers, onions, green asparagus, kohlrabi and fennel offer a colorful selection of vegetables for the grill.
- Delicious corn on the cob is a simple and sustainable side dish.
- Vegetable skewers with the vegetables mentioned above are not only a visual eye-catcher, but also a taste delight.
- You can also put potatoes in the embers without aluminum foil. Or wrap them in a cabbage leaf first!
Extra tip: Marinate the vegetables beforehand (oil, mustard, salt and lots of herbs), then they taste twice as good!
4. Snake bread or stick bread - the hit for young and old
A special highlight at every barbecue is the snake bread. It is very easy to prepare and you don't need any packaging. Here is the recipe:
Ingredients:
- 500 g flour
- (7g / 1 packet of dry yeast optional)
- 300 ml of lukewarm water
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- herb butter and garlic for spreading
Directions:
- Mix the flour with the dry yeast in a bowl.
- Add the lukewarm water, salt and olive oil and knead the dough well.
- Let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1 hour until it has doubled in size.
- Divide the dough into small portions and form thin strands.
- Twist the strands around one end and bake them over the grill until golden brown.
- Spread the snake bread with herb butter and garlic for extra flavor.
5. Avoid disposable cutlery
Just bring cutlery from home! Alternatively, there are many products that are particularly light and are ideal for use as travel cutlery: This way you can always have your own cutlery with you and avoid plastic waste: Link to product .
6. Store leftovers in a waste-free manner!
For the leftovers from your barbecue, we recommend reusable (vegan) beeswax cloths. This will keep your food fresh and you can avoid disposable packaging: Link to product . The "Eco Bread Box Bento Flex" is also a sustainable way to safely transport leftover food: Link to product .
7. Be careful when choosing charcoal!
Here we have taken a closer look at the charcoal! Many charcoal products contain different types of wood than those declared - and often even tropical woods!
It is mainly imported from Poland, Nigeria, Namibia, South Africa and Paraguay – all countries that pose a high risk for illegal logging.
The WWF found that 60% of the 36 charcoal products examined, available in regular supermarkets and hardware stores, contained other types of wood than those declared, and 40% even contained tropical woods found.
What can you do?
- Switch to sustainable charcoal alternatives : For example, you can also grill with olive stones, grape vines or corn cobs. These are agricultural products that would otherwise simply be thrown away.
- If you want to use charcoal, make sure that you not only buy it with an FSC or Naturland seal , but above all that the wood comes from regional forests .
- Remember: vague statements such as “not tropical wood”, “natural product” or “from natural sources” are not sufficient and are only meant to lure you into a trap.
